More often than not, a car's mileage is as important a consideration as its price for the common man in India. Despite the country's raging penchant for mileage, not a lot of manufacturers seem to be able to get it right, while some nail it like there's no tomorrow. So we shortlisted the top 5 most fuel-efficient cars in India based on their respective ARAI mileage.
P.S: Mileage is influenced by several factors, including road conditions, car maintenance, and individual driving style.
1. Maruti Suzuki Ciaz SHVS
After the Baleno and SX4 failed to garner numbers in the mid-sized sedan segment for the nation's biggest automobile manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki India decided to enter a new contestant in the race i.e. the all-new Ciaz. Replacing SX4, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is offered with both, petrol and diesel, motors and now a diesel hybrid.
Called the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki) hybrid, the car comes with an integrated starter generator, a larger capacity battery, and start-stop technology that help the vehicle return better mileage. While the old Maruti Ciaz diesel had an ARAI certified mileage of 26.21Km/l, the Ciaz SHVS returns an outstanding 28.09Km/l. This effectively makes the Ciaz SHVS hybrid India's most fuel-efficient car.
2. Maruti Suzuki Celerio Diesel
Buoyed by the success of the Celerio petrol, Maruti Suzuki India, has, rolled out the diesel version of the car in the country at a starting price of Rs. 4.65 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Claimed to deliver 27.62km/l, theMaruti Celerio diesel is the second most fuel-efficient car in India.

The cylinder block of this new small engine is all aluminium and gets a compact fuel distribution system along with a turbocharger. This engine churns out a maximum power output of 47bhp and 125Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and does not come with the option of an AMT.
3. Honda Jazz

However, the biggest change is under the hood as it is now available with a diesel engine. The vehicle comes with two engine options - 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel and 1.2-litre i-VTEC petrol - both of which power the Amaze as well.
The diesel unit, mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, churns out 99bhp & 200Nm and is claimed to be the most fuel-efficient car in its league with an ARAI-certified mileage of 27.3km/l. Though the diesel engine used by the Jazz is the same that powers the City, the former with 8 per cent taller gear ratios return better mileage.
4. Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire

This one is no surprise, for it is a Maruti Suzuki car after all. The company launched a facelift of the Swift DZire earlier this year, and amongst all the changes it underwent, the most important was its increased fuel-efficiency. The 1.3-litre diesel motor puts out 74bhp, and 190Nm of torque and returns a mileage of 26.59Km/l, thus making it the most fuel-efficient car in India.

Considering how much we love sedans and fuel-efficiency when it comes to cars, it took Honda quite some time to get here. Even though the Honda City has been sold in the country since 1998, it took the company 16 years and three generations to offer a diesel engine on this much-sought-after car.
Well, better late than never, as they say! Its 1498cc, 4-cylinder, double overhead camshaft 16-valve diesel motor delivers 99bhp and 200Nm, and claims a mileage of 26Km/l. All content/images source from:- Ndtv
