India Sri Lanka Second Test.... Sri Lanka Trailing by 253 Runs in the First innings with Seven Wickets in hand,Match Evenly Poised at this moment.

Sri Lanka trailing by 253 runs in the first innings with seven wickets in hand at the end of Day 2 in the second Test after India bowled out for 393 earlier in the day today.

Wriddhiman Saha again held the Indian innings together on the morning with his second half-century in the series as he saw India through the first session at the P Sara Oval ground in Colombo. However, it was all over for visitors after he was dismissed in the second session today.

SL then lost their top three batsmen and were 140 for three with Lahiru Thirimanne (28*) and Angelo Mathews (19*) in the middle at the end of day’s play. With the bowlers dominating the proceedings the match was looking like in balance when second day's play called off.

Yadav, replacing Varun Aaron in the side, had struck with his first delivery to send back Dimuth Karunaratne leaving SL on one for one. Looking to make use of the conditions and create further dents in the line-up, especially with the assistance on offer from the wicket Ishant Sharma and Yadav continued to bend their backs but with not much success after the first wicket. 34 runs later Stuart Binny had Kaushal Silva nick one to the wicketkeeper in his first over but, the delivery being a no ball India missed an opportunity for another early wicket.

Meanwhile at the other end Sangakkara, playing in the last Test of his illustrious career added to the score line while looking to keep the innings on course. With every run being cheered by the spectators, the former Sri Lanka captain anchored the innings. The No 3 batsman survived on 24 after edging a Ravichandran Ashwin delivery to the first slip. The ball flew high over the slip and although Ajinkya Rahane got a hand to it he couldn't catch it.

Dancing down the track, Sangakkara hit the off-spinner to the fence straight down the ground. Continuing to strike the ball with panache, the top-order batsman took Sri Lanka to Tea at 65 for one with Silva.

However, the experienced campaigner was sent back by the Ashwin-Rahane combination in the fifth over of the last session of the day. After the batsman edged the delivery, the fielder dived to his left to pull off a stunning catch close to the ground in the slips. The batsman returned to the dressing room for 32 to a standing ovation.

Silva then found an able ally in Thirimanne as he carried the innings forward; en route posting a timely half-century. The opener’s determined knock was ended by Amit Mishra bringing Mathews to the crease. He departed top-edging the ball to Ashwin at short fine-leg in the latter half of the third session.

While the batsmen did the hard yards to keep the scoreboard ticking, the Indian bowling attack strove for a wicket. Hitting the deck hard again in the final overs of the day, the pacers looked to create opportunities for a breakthrough. Yadav, who had given India their first breakthrough bowled a probing line and asked questions off the batsmen. However, batting patiently Mathews and Thirimanne took the team to stumps in an unbroken 26-run partnership.

Earlier, after the departure of Rohit Sharma at the stroke of stumps on Day 1, Ashwin came out to bat with Saha on the second morning and returned to the pavilion for two. The lower-order bat hit the Mathews delivery straight to short extra cover and left the team on 321 for seven in the third over of the day.

At the other end Saha survived close calls while India stayed afloat. In the second over of the morning, the Dhammika Prasad delivery brushed past Saha’s off-stump but didn't rattle the woodwork. He survived edges and nicks while continuing to extend the innings with Mishra as the SL pacers bowled a disciplined line. Mishra on his part played watchfully; on occasions leaving deliveries pitched on the off-stump as the Mathews-led attack kept the batsmen on their toes.

The Indian batsmen survived the first half of the session to take India past the 350-run mark even as the SL bowlers fired on all cylinders and utilised the conditions optimally. Grinding it out in the middle as the SL bowlers dominated the proceedings, Mishra scrapped together useful 24 runs until Dushmantha Chameera forced an edge through to the wicketkeeper.

At 367 for eight Ishant joined Saha in an effort to carry the innings forward. The wicketkeeper-batsman who had toiled through the morning, reached a hard earned half-century with a single to long-on as the pair saw India through to the end of the session.

India lasted for three overs after lunch as Herath trapped Saha (56) and Ishant lbw off successive overs to wrap-up India’s first innings.

End of Day 1:
India 1st inn 319/6 in 87.2 overs (KL Rahul 108, R Sharma 79, V Kohli 78, D Prasad 2/72, R Herath 2/73)
