Early blows by Indian Spinners R Ashwin and Amit Mishra left Sri Lanka reeling on five for two in the second innings at stumps after India were bowled out for 375 in the first innings. The home team were trailing by 187 runs when play ended on Day 2 in Galle as per BCCI.TV.
Centuries by Shikhar Dhawan (134) and Virat Kohli (103) helped India on top for the most part of the innings. However, two quick blows by spinner Tharindu Kaushal in the second session to send back the India captain and Ajinkya Rahane, and Nuwan Pradeep’s double blow with the second new ball helped Sri Lanka get a foot in the door. Although the off-spinner returned to claim two quick wickets early in the last session and finished with a fifer, a gritty 60 by Wriddhiman Saha along with useful contributions from tailenders helped India to a 192-run lead as reported by BCCI.TVOpening the bowling for India, Ashwin then struck on the fifth ball of the innings to claim Dimuth Karunaratane. The delivery rattled the opener’s stumps to leave SL on 0 for one. In the second over, Mishra rattled Kaushal Silva’s stumps with a googly with just a run on the board. Nightwatchman Dhammika Prasad and Kumar Sangakkara then took the team through to stumps, as per BCCI.TV reports.
Earlier, after a shaky start to his innings on the first day Dhawan shaped the Indian innings with a determinedly constructed innings with the captain after being left on 28 for two. The 227-run stand for the third wicket help lay a solid foundation for a good total. Resuming on the overnight score of 128 for two the Dhawan-Kohli pair blunted the SL attack while maintaining a steady flow of runs on the second day. The pair dominated in the first session as they added 99 runs to the overnight score without losing a wicket before lunch as per BCCI.TV reports.
While Kohli kept the bowlers at bay en route to his half-century in the morning session, the opener too continued from where he had left in the previous evening to reach his century. As they strengthened the team’s total, the opener reached the mark with a boundary through cover region in the first session.
The partnership for the third-wicket continued to flourish into the second session as Dhawan and Virat scored off the SL attack at a steady pace to build on the lead. The captain, who was in good nick as he drove and cut to collect runs at an unhurried pace to build the innings brought up his 11th Test ton with a boundary through extra-cover off Tharindu. However, the watchfully crafted innings came to an unfortunate end when he was adjudged lbw to the off-spinner later in the over.
In his next over, Kaushal then sent back Ajinkya Rahane for naught leaving India on 257 for four. Dhawan was then joined in the middle by Saha in an effort to carry the innings forward. The wicketkeeper batsman whacked a full toss from the off-spinner to the fence to get off mark an over later. However, 37 runs later, before the partnership could take shape, Dhawan lost his bails to Pradeep. The pacer got the inside edge from the toe end of the bat onto the stumps to dislodge the bail on off and middle-stump. In his next over, he then rattled Ashwin’s stumps leaving India on 302 for six as per BCCI.TV reports.
Saha then took India to tea at 304 for six with Harbhajan Singh, who was yet to open his account. In the ninth over of the final session, the lower-order batsman was the first to depart. After a useful 28-run stand with the wicketkeeper-batsman, Harbhajan lost his stumps to Tharindu. And 14 runs later, with the spinner getting purchase off the wicket, Mishra coming down the track to the off-spinner too was bowled leaving India on 344 for eight.
Ishant Sharma then joined Saha in extending India’s lead as the session approached the end of day’s play. Anchoring the innings, the lower middle-order reached his fifty by whipping Pradeep to the deep mid-wicket fence. Batting patiently, Ishant held up one end while Saha farmed the strike to extend the lead. A bouncer from Pradeep ended Saha’s effort for 60 and the partnership on 22. Ishant and Varun Aaron then added nine to the tally until the later was removed by Tharindu to bowl India out.
